What we might call our personality, or our conditioned self, or our ego, is more or less the sum total of our habitual thinking, which has been influenced by personal circumstances, people and happenings around us since we are born. We have derived our sense of self from this persona. There are few things which are common to this ‘Psychology’ of ours.
1) We all have got one and we are constantly caught up in protecting it.
2) A certain amount of our thinking can be described as ‘insecure’ which brings us to believe that something is majorly lacking.
and most importantly,
3) We are NOT our ‘Psychology’___ we are the thinker, not the sum total of our thoughts.
And it is this last point that points us toward a different way of being with our psychology.
If we are the thinker, not the thoughts, then we don’t have to conform to or blindly believe in our thought-created negative mental movies of past and future. Gradually, when we come to this understanding, we also begin to notice that which is constant and unchanging- the inner spark/ the genie in us/ the wisdom within that makes up the human potential.
Dr George Pransky, a psychologist who has spent nearly 30 years teaching a revolutionary approach to the subject of Psychology, talks about this ‘inner spark’ like this:
“Everyone experiences times of mental clarity and wellbeing, even moments of out and out genius. Even in the extremes of mental illness, every single patient has moments of ‘normalcy’ independent of the severity of their disorder. At a more personal level, we have all come up with inspirations and solutions that seem to have shown up out of nowhere to save the day. At times, our children’s wisdom goes way beyond their level of education and life experience. And we consistently see high levels of wellbeing, grace, and hopefulness emerge in times of crisis such as floods and earthquakes, and even with people informed of terminal illnesses. So, it should be equally obvious that the human potential for life enjoyment, mental clarity, creativity, and relationship satisfaction is considerably higher than we are manifesting in our everyday lives.”
As we become aware of and get a glimpse of that ‘Genie in Us’ or that ‘Inner Spark’, we start to live with greater ease, fulfillment and wellbeing. While our life situations may still seem messy from time to time, people can’t help but notice a twinkle in our eye and a pleasant feeling in our presence.
“Sit and listen to your inner guidance and allow your wisdom to surface.”
